 After 9/11, Americans were told the enemy hated them because they were free.

Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern says the Pentagon’s own Defense Science Board reached a very different conclusion: the anger was driven by U.S. policy in the Middle East, not American freedoms.

“Muslims do not hate our freedom, but rather they hate our policies.”

That distinction mattered because the official slogan helped sell decades of war, surveillance, occupation, and regime-change politics as a defense of civilization itself.
