“How dare other countries refuse to be economically strangled by us?”

The U.S. built a sanctions empire and called it “rules-based order.” Now China builds a financial channel that lets countries trade without asking Washington for permission, and suddenly the Wall Street Journal calls it “hobbling Western sanctions.” Translation: “How dare other countries refuse to be economically strangled by us?” Washington spent years treating the dollar, SWIFT, tariffs, export controls, and secondary sanctions as weapons only America was allowed to use. It assumed the rest of the world would simply accept being cut off, frozen, blocked, fined, and bullied. But sanctions are not divine law. They are political coercion. And once coercion becomes too frequent, too arrogant, and too weaponized, everyone starts looking for exits. That is what the yuan is becoming: not a slogan, not a fantasy, but an escape route from American financial punishment. The U.S. is not angry because China is “luring” anyone. It is angry because countries under pressure are choosing survival over obedience. Washington thought sanctions were a one-way weapon. China turned them into a reason for the world to build around America.
