Tarik Cyril Amar argues that Germany’s failure to secure a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council was not just a diplomatic setback.
In his view, it was a humiliation.
And he believes the world had reasons.
Tarik says Germany’s conduct over the past two years, especially its support for Israel during the Gaza onslaught, its military cooperation, arms deliveries, and its decision to side with Israel at the International Court of Justice after South Africa’s genocide case, severely damaged its standing internationally.
He also argues that Germany’s domestic crackdown on pro-Palestinian voices, including Jewish critics of Israel, exposed what he sees as a deep contradiction in German political culture: using the memory of the Holocaust while silencing those who oppose Israeli crimes today.
Then comes what Tarik describes as German arrogance.

For Tarik, this is the crisis of modern German foreign policy: a declining state acting like a moral empire while aligning itself with policies much of the world now rejects.
Tarik concludes that Germany did not lose because the world misunderstood it.
Germany lost because, in his view, the world understood it too well.
