Contrary to what many Zionists believe, Israel has no right to oppress.
I’m putting on my Progressive Jew skullcap to dismantle Donny Deutsch’s Zionist argument.
In the video (link below), Donny opens with standard ZBS when he says, “All ‘Zionist’ means is Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state.” Actually, it doesn’t.
First off, human beings have a right to exist, and that includes Palestinians. And how has Israel created that “Jewish state” with exclusive rights for Jews and maintained an artificial Jewish majority for 78 years? Through ethnic cleansing, ghettoization, erasure, occupation, apartheid, and genocide.
Contrary to what many Zionists believe, Israel has no right to oppress.
Zionists tend to call all criticism of Israel from people they don’t like “antisemitism.” As a result, they’ve undermined the credibility of genuine antisemitism cases, helped cause antisemitic incidents to spike by falsely claiming Israeli atrocities are a “Jewish project,” and turned Zionism into one of the most disliked movements on earth.
Do some genuinely antisemitic people hide behind the anti‑Zionist label? Yes. But from everything I’ve seen, an overwhelming majority of Israel’s critics simply oppose apartheid Israel’s crimes against humanity.
Why is it so hard for Zionists like Donny to understand that a massive number of Americans intensely dislike an apartheid state that commits genocide with their tax dollars?
I do get where Donny is coming from. We’re two Jews of the same age who grew up not far from each other in the New York area, and we both spent most of our adulthood in advertising (the difference is that Donny, as the son of an agency founder, grew up with a silver spoon; I’m the son of an electrician). Where we were raised, fanatical Zionists were all over the Jewish community.
But we’re big boys now, and the racist movement we were raised in doesn’t have to be a life sentence.
