Why China
succeeded through globalisation and America
declined:
‘In America you can change the political parties but you can’t change the policy. In China, you cannot change the party but you can change the policies.
China is a vibrant market economy but it is not a capitalist economy. There’s no way a group of billionaires could control the politburo, as billionaires control US policymaking. So in China, you have a vibrant market economy, but capital does not rise above political authority.’
—Chinese venture capitalist Eric Li
Through globalisation, the US’ corporations made record profits, to a level never before seen in history. As did China’s. But why do China’s cities look like dazzling examples of the future, while America’s cities look like shells of their former selves?
Because in China
, the Communist Party’s political control made sure that the record profits were used for national development, the liberation of hundreds of millions from poverty, the uplifting of living standards, and the development of the best infrastructure on Earth.
In the US
, the oligarchs’ control over the political system ensured that the enormous wealth that was created was hoarded by the oligarch class in private hands, rather than spent on the development of the country and improving the lives of the American people.
