The disruption of maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has hit the UAE harder than any other GCC state. Yet Oman appears to be edging toward indirect coordination with Iran.
That divergence could become highly consequential if regional ambitions by Mohammed bin Zayed ever turn toward Khasab, the strategic Omani enclave overlooking the Strait. Control of this area would dramatically enhance the UAE’s leverage over one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints.
Ironically, it could open a rare strategic window for Iran to once again support Muscat. Fifty years after preserving Oman’s territorial integrity by suppressing the Marxist Dhofar rebellion, Tehran could find itself backing Muscat again, though this time against Emirati territorial ambitions.
