I wrote this a week ago and wouldn't change a thing. No doubt Netanyahu will try to sabotage the deal by escalating in Lebanon and Gaza, hoping Iran will respond in kind. But his options are limited and complicated by the upcoming elections in Israel. As long as he doesn't seek to save face by attacking Cuba, Trump may win back some of the isolationist and anti-war MAGA crowd, while simultaneously upsetting the neocons, lobby fundraisers and Israel-firsters in his Republican base. The war exposed, yet again, the limits of military power. Beyond enhancing Iran's regional influence and global reputation, Trump smashed the world economy and people will not quickly forget the vandalism. He also reminded America's enemies that even the most powerful garrison states are not invincible, especially if they keep fooling themselves into believing there are technological solutions to their economic and political challenges. This is also a lesson Israel refuses to learn. Other than convince its critics that Australia is a vassal state, why the Albanese Government publicly supported the unprovoked and illegal US-Israel attack on Iran is difficult to understand. It was both unnecessary and jejune, and if this agreement is ultimately the outcome, no less humiliating for Canberra.
