Trump Rejects Iran’s Offer. Obviously. Of course he did. The proposal was laughable. But here’s the thing. Iran knew he’d reject it. That was rather the point. What Tehran has done, with the kind of strategic patience that would make a chess grandmaster weep, is corner a man who genuinely believes he invented the concept of a good deal. Donald Trump, author of The Art of the Deal, a man who considers himself the greatest negotiator in the history of human civilization, is now sitting in a room with no windows and no exits. And his ego is blocking the only door. Every day that passes, Iran gets stronger. Thirteen million barrels removed from global markets. Fertilizer prices climbing toward the ceiling. American drivers staring in fury at petrol station forecourts. A recession that was once described as “possible” now begins to look rather more like “scheduled.” Iran doesn’t need to win everything. They’re not trying to. They know perfectly well that peace will require concessions on both sides. The difference is that their concessions will be small, and his will be enormous. They are simply waiting for him to figure that out. The problem is the mirror. Trump cannot look into it and see a man who is losing. The Strait of Hormuz will remain closed for exactly as long as it takes for reality to batter its way through that particular psychological defence. The world, meanwhile, holds its breath and watches a man famous for making deals discover, rather publicly, that he has absolutely none of the cards.
