In Trump’s mind, Taiwan is not a sacred democratic ally.

Trump just said the quiet part out loud. Taiwan is 59 miles from China. America is 9,500 miles away. China is a “very, very powerful, big country.” And Taiwan “stole” America’s chip industry. So much for “defending democracy.” In Trump’s mind, Taiwan is not a sacred democratic ally. It is a small island, far away, expensive to defend, militarily impossible to save, and useful only because of chips. That is the brutal truth Taiwan’s fantasy class refuses to understand: The West does not protect Taiwan because it loves Taiwan. It uses Taiwan because it understands exactly where Taiwan sits in China’s core interests. Taiwan’s value to Washington is not sovereignty. It is friction. Not democracy. Leverage. Not freedom. A pressure point against China. And once that pressure point becomes too costly, the same people who called Taiwan “a beacon of democracy” will suddenly discover geography, logistics, and “difficult realities.” A pawn may imagine itself brave because it moves forward. But the fate of a pawn is never decided by the pawn. It is decided by the hand that is willing to sacrifice it.
