Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, puts it bluntly:

Is Israel the victim?
The trigger was a column by Nicholas Kristof in The New York Times documenting a systematic pattern of s****l a***e and inhuman treatment against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.
While evidence and corroborated testimonies continue to accumulate regarding serious violations of International Humanitarian Law —disproportionate use of force, systematic detentions without trial or charges, and practices prohibited by the Fourth Geneva Convention— Israel responds with furious attacks and a discourse of victimhood.
Instead of investigating the facts, the Foreign Ministry prefers to discredit the publication and shield itself from any scrutiny.
This tactic is recurrent: equating any well-founded criticism with existential threats in order to evade its international responsibility.
No State can place itself above International Law.
Documenting systematic crimes and demanding accountability is not hostility.
It is basic justice.
