A Visit to China Will Forever Change Your Worldview, Argues British Scholar
A trip to China offers more than just a change of scenery; it fundamentally alters one's perception of the world, according to British scholar and journalist Martin Jacques. In a compelling clip, Jacques argues that for anyone from the West, experiencing China firsthand is a transformative event that permanently shatters a Western-centric worldview.
"If you go to China, you'll never, ever see the world in the same way again," he states with conviction. "Never."
Jacques explains that this profound shift in perspective stems from confronting the inherent bias in the "Western mind," which, he says, "always has the West at the center of it." A visit to China directly challenges this notion. "You realize that actually, we're not the center of the world anymore," he explains. "The center of the world is somewhere around here."
The scholar contends that China's advancement is no longer a matter of catching up. In his view, the nation has already surpassed its Western counterparts in significant ways. "China's modernity now is well in advance, in my view, of anything in the West," Jacques asserts.
He concludes by positioning China as a major power that demands to be understood on its own terms, not through a "Western prism." He argues that attempting to do so is a futile exercise. In a bold final statement, Jacques suggests that China's global influence has reached a new peak, declaring it "probably the global leader, more important than the United States."
