Points:
(1) Trump is trying to buy time, which suggests two things: (a) he doesn’t want to ditch the diplomatic option and (b) he would prefer to not restart the war, which is a loser for him no matter how many targets blow up.
(2) Iran will view this ceasefire extension as a victory. And it should—the Iranians essentially used Trump’s blockade against him.
(3) The U.S. blockade is not an asset; it’s an obstacle to serious talks. Trump thought this pressure point would be leverage he could wield to push Tehran into negotiations on his terms. But it did the exact opposite.
(4) Iran will take its sweet time formulating a proposal. And when it eventually submits one, Trump will likely reject it as he has done with every other Iranian proposal.
(5) None of this matters if maximalism continues to rule the day. Buying time is only valuable if the time is spent wisely. Coming back to the table is only valuable if actual negotiating goes on.
