Trump has claimed that by blockading the Strait of Hormuz, oil tankers will instead sail toward the United States to buy American oil.
What’s truly strange is the idea that countries across the globe would suddenly view the United States as a reliable and stable supplier of oil.
The U.S. political system has shown itself to be deeply unreliable in this regard. It produces presidents who can reverse course on a whim, disregard international commitments or at best honour them only for the duration of a single term, act unpredictably, use their position to force concessions on unrelated issues, and frequently seek to dictate to other nations who can buy what, at what price, and in what quantities.
Long-term energy security requires predictable partners and that's something the current American political model struggles to provide.
