Mockingbird did not end.
The Church Committee exposed it.
The CIA said it would stop recruiting journalists as assets.
Frank Church himself warned, in 1975, about the technological capacity the NSA was developing.
He said that if it were ever turned against the American people, there would be no way to fight back, no place to hide.
He said this in 1975, about technology that was primitive by current standards.
What Mockingbird required in 1965, individual journalists cultivated over years, careful relationship management, patient editorial influence, the current information environment now delivers algorithmically, at scale, without the CIA needing to make a single phone call.
You don't need to own journalists when you can shape the entire information environment.
You don't need to suppress stories when the algorithm can simply ensure they don't reach critical mass.
The mechanism evolved.
The goal is identical: a population that has access to technically public information and still does not know what is being done in its name.
We are living in the most information-rich moment in human history.
We are also living through the most sophisticated management of that information in human history.
These facts are not in contradiction.
They are the same fact.
