In a move suspected to benefit the Isr*el lobby, the UK government is moving to dismantle a cornerstone of British democracy: the right to a trial by jury. For over eight centuries, juries have served as a vital safeguard against the abuse of power, ensuring that verdicts are decided by ordinary citizens who are representative of society rather than judges who are disproportionately white and come from elite private-school backgrounds. Now, under the guise of "clearing court backlogs," the UK government is pushing for judge-led trials in a move that critics warn will entrench racial and class bias within the legal system. This shift comes as juries across the UK continue to acquit pro-P*lestine activists, leading to widespread suspicion that the true motive is to criminalise dissent against Isr*el. Attempts to scrap jury trials are being led by two government ministers who happen to be pro-Isr*el lawyers. The move is being driven by Courts Minister Sarah Sackman, an ardently pro-Isr*el former vice-chair of the Jewish Labour Movement who has received tens of thousands in donations from pro-Isr*el lobbyists. Sackman, who once worked in the Isra*eli Supreme Court, has also been a vocal opponent of International Criminal Court arrest warrants for Israeli leaders amid an ongoing g*nocide in G*za. The charge to scrap jury trials is led by Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy. In 2017, his own review concluded that they "act as a filter for prejudice." Yet today, Lammy - who has accepted at least £32,500 from pro-Isr*el lobbyists - labels the jury system "a peculiar way to run a public service." With Sackman and Lammy at the helm, the UK judiciary's independence is under fire. By replacing a diverse jury of peers with a disproportionately white, elite judiciary, the UK government is stripping away the last line of defence for activists and marginalised communities.
