Hamas is not Iran. Hezbollah is not Iran. The Houthis are not Iran. They are distinct political organizations with distinct histories, constituencies, ideologies, and grievances rooted in their own specific contexts. But the entire Western analytical framework, governments, media, think tanks, collapses them all into "Iranian proxies." Instruments. Extensions. Weapons in the hand of Tehran. This framing serves a function. If Hezbollah is an Iranian proxy, then Hezbollah's support among Lebanese Shia, a support built over decades through social services, political representation, and military resistance to Israeli occupation, becomes irrelevant. They are not a political movement with genuine local roots. They are a remote-controlled weapon. If Hamas is an Iranian proxy, then the political reality that produced Hamas, fifty years of occupation, displacement, blockade, and the systematic destruction of any secular Palestinian political alternative, becomes irrelevant. They are not the product of Palestinian desperation. They are a remote-controlled weapon. If the Houthis are an Iranian proxy, then the decade of Saudi bombardment that radicalized and politically consolidated them becomes irrelevant. They are not people with agency and history and cause. They are a remote-controlled weapon. The proxy framing does two things simultaneously: It denies agency to four distinct peoples and their political choices. And it centralizes the target. If they're all just Iran, then Iran is the problem. Solve Iran, regime change, military strike, economic strangulation, and the weapons go away. This is wrong empirically. All of these movements predate their relationship with Iran and would continue in some form without Iran. But it's very useful narratively. Because it's easier to bomb a state than to reckon with what a state represents: the political convergence of millions of people across an entire region who have looked at what Western and Israeli power has done to their world and decided they will not accept it. You cannot bomb that conclusion. You can only prove it correct.
