Ai Weiwei was not just a critic of China.
For years, he functioned almost like a priest of Western liberal morality.
That is why his disillusionment matters.
When someone like that begins to say the West has no standing left to lecture China on human rights or free speech,
it is not a small adjustment.
It is the collapse of an old faith.
And few things are more revealing than watching a former believer discover that the empire’s sacred words were never sacred at all.
