The term "checkmate" originates directly from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat", which means "the king is helpless". Iranians have been playing chess for a thousand years. The Iran slowdown is a defensive chess move where you protect the piece. Allow me to explain.
My take is Israel dishonestly sold the war as a quick war to Trump. On weekend Iran would be pummelled. By the time markets opened, Iran would be back at the negotiating table humbled and ready to deal. Regime change was the cover for the media but in reality the war was about doing a Treaty of Versailles level imposed peace.
Then they killed Khamenei and bombed the cities. Guess where all the anti regime sentiment is? In the cities. Guess where all the regime’s supporters are? Peri-urban and rural. So over the weekend not only did they force nationalism by killing a leader, they lost all the anti regime guys because they bombed them. Genius. Unfortunately for its enemies Iran had gone full blockchain and decentralised command and control into cells with a 3 level deep succession plan.
Iran had a battle plan ready and executed it. It sent hundreds of missiles to Israel to serve home the point that war will come to those who start it. And it did it in such a way that it was much harder to track its mobile launchers. Then it systematically hit infrastructure of U.S. allies who were helping US.
Hidden between this chaos was their fait accompli. They systematically sent older slower missiles and sacrificial drones to where Patriot batteries and THAAD systems were. After two days and two thousand bombing sorties later, U.S. & Israel realised something…. Iran had changed the rules of the game. It was now about its armed forces, their missile launching capability and their stockpile of missiles surviving vs Israel & US being able to intercept the missiles. Which one would finish first?
Israel and US realised in a panic that the way they were pursuing war was playing into Iran’s hands, which was soaking up their cruise missiles (The first two days saw 20%+ of US’ global tomahawk stockpile used), and their defensive interceptors. Within roughly two weeks, they would finish! They immediately changed their strategy.
The slowing down of Iran’s missiles and drone attacks is because of this change in strategy. The US has now moved all focus onto identifying and focusing bombing runs on disrupting the missile launchers and silos. Gone are regime change focused shock and awe tactics. It’s all about total surveillance using drones , satellites & aircrafts and using data gathered from that to focus firepower. Iran similarly, to conserve its precious delivery platforms and missiles, is launching only when it can get away with it.
The US military is built to invade countries with airforce being used to dominate skies, and provide cover to artillery and infantry as it takes territory. It’s not built for modern warfare. It had simply not thought that Iran focused its entire battle plan on forcing 3 Patriots ( $9.6 million dollars combined cost) to defend one sacrificial ballistic missile. Iran knows that US is not China. It’s not a builder nation. It would not be able to replenish fast and cheaply. So it changed the game. And Israel and US have no answer. They are scrambling for interceptor stocks from Japan etc but that buys them what? Two weeks? Ten days?
Shah Mat baby. Shah Mat.
