International law is universal, or it is nothing.

The statement by Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul—that regimes like Iran “cannot invoke international law”—is a reckless assault on international law’s foundations International law rests on the sovereign equality of all states. No state can unilaterally declare others unworthy of its protections or obligations. Germany, of all nations, should know this selective logic revives the Nazi-era mindset that “illegitimate” or “inferior” entities could be stripped of legal rights, justifying aggression and lawlessness. If Iran is denied the right to invoke international law, it could logically claim release from its duties—no restraint on force, no accountability for violations. The system collapses into might-makes-right. International law is universal, or it is nothing.
