If the US deploys ground troops into Iran, captured American servicemen could face trial in Iranian courts as members of a "terrorist organization."
If the US deploys ground troops into Iran, captured American servicemen could face trial in Iranian courts as members of a "terrorist organization."
This follows from Iran’s designation of U.S. forces—specifically U.S. CENTCOM, broader U.S. military personnel in the region, the Pentagon, and affiliated entities—as a “terrorist” group.
First enacted in 2019 in response to the U.S. FTO designation of the IRGC and expanded in 2020 to encompass all U.S. forces, this designation establishes a domestic legal basis under Iranian law for treating captured U.S. personnel as terrorists rather than lawful combatants.
