William Daroff, CEO of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, says their power comes from the perceived influence they have over the US government. "There is this belief that America is at the center of the world and that American Jewry, because of our engagement in American government, is also adjacent to the center of the world," Daroff tells JNS TV. "So, people who are—and governments that are looking to curry favor in Washington—whether it's on the Hill or with the White House, will often engage with us as a means of trying to incre– better their position with the American government..." Note he also says the Conference of Presidents started as a "proxy" for Israel.
