Rubio called for "a new Western century," which a colleague pointed out to me sounds exactly like the 1990s call for a new "American century" by the neocons.

A lot of shocking moments at this year, but the one that really stood out to me was how the Europeans gave Rubio a standing ovation. Though I disagree with much of it, his was clearly a strong and clever speech. But it was shocking to me to see the Europeans so enthusiastically throw themselves at Rubio for simply offering them a new partnership - even though the partnership will be set entirely by the US and the basis of it will be an embrace of expansionism and the building of "vast empires extending out across the globe," as well as decrying anti-colonialism and that the "the West’s age of dominance has come to an end." Rubio called for "a new Western century," which a colleague pointed out to me sounds exactly like the 1990s call for a new "American century" by the neocons. Despite all of this - ideas that most of Europe thankfully has put behind it - the Europeans were salivating at Rubio's illusionary offer of a "new partnership." The Europeans seem so adamant of being America's vassal continent that they are willing to accept any basis for it, as long as the US pretends that Europe is an American partner. While in Davos, Canada's Mark Carney called for "the sign" to be taken down, in Munich, the Europeans responded by putting up the biggest, flashiest sign yet.
