Marco Rubio’s speech at the Munich Security Conference made it clear that the United States intends to restore Western domination and to place its hegemony above values and multilateralism. While many of us have long understood this reality, he expressed it without apology, even lamenting Europe losing its colonies and urging it to reclaim strength and direction. The language of equality among peoples feels increasingly hollow in this context. What he is advancing is the idea that the West stands superior in civilization and must therefore dominate, and that Europe must align or risk marginalization. It is a clear invitation to reassert control across the world. Those of us in the Global South must recognize this position for what it is and understand that the United States and the broader West will pursue wealth and power with determination and without sentimental restraint. The deeper concern lies within our own house. Many of our nations in Africa are led by leaders who do not even require subjugation because they surrender leverage freely. They are prepared to trade land, resources, and long-term sovereignty in exchange for the guarantee of staying in power and preserving narrow privileges. That internal weakness becomes the true opening for our dominance. What we are witnessing resembles a new Berlin Conference. In Berlin, imperial powers claimed a civilizing mission and portrayed others as uncivilized to justify their conquest. Today there is no need for such moral cover. They speak and act from a deep sense of entitlement toward other nations, their people, and their resources. That entitlement extends beyond economics into culture and identity. They assume the right to shape the political order of others and to export their model as universal. Africa is already trapped in systems that take our wealth and limit our choices. If we stay silent and divided, those systems will only grow stronger, and what little sovereignty we have left will slowly disappear.
