I continue to find Israel’s retrieval of the remains of its final captive in the Gaza Strip curious.
Israel consistently used the failure of Hamas to return these remains as a pretext to reject discussion of the second phase of the Trump initiative. To a lesser extent Israel also used the missing remains of its last captive, buried somewhere under more than 60 million tons of rubble in the Gaza Strip, as a pretext for its refusal to meet any of its commitments stipulated in the 8 October 2025 Israel-Hamas Sharm al-Shaikh Agreement.
Israeli policy to continue indefinitely with the first phase of the Trump initiative was eventually overruled by the US, which announced the imminent commencement of the its second phase.
This decision, I believe, was in significant part taken so that Trump could seize center stage at the annual Davos conclave of the very rich and thoroughly objectionable after Carney’s landmark speech, that the US-led world order is no longer and had always been an illusion, generated too many headlines for the uber-narcissist’s liking.
Then, Abracadabra, the missing remains suddenly materialize. In other words, the remains had been there all along.
Either Israel had until that moment been unaware of their location, and found them at the very last moment through a stroke of extraordinary good fortune, or it had long known where to find these remains, but chose not to retrieve them in order to use their absence as a pretext to indefinitely prolong the first phase of the plan. Take your pick.
