A picture is worth a thousand words and you can tell everything you need to know about US China relations in this picture
On the left we have Marco Rubio smiling like a schoolboy. After a year of talking a big game and preaching the message the United States must "decouple" from China, Marco and the entire US government has officially flipped it's stance on China.
Now the message is one of "strengthen dialogue and cooperation" and make 2026 a year of "mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation."
On the right, we have Wang Yi with a stern poker face, knowing the US government often says one thing and does another but ultimately it's an expression of confidence as he knows the US economy can not survive without China.
Yes, the United States is an important market for Chinese companies and the export driven Chinese economy. But it's only 1 market. China is the top trading partner to over 120 countries around the globe and despite seeing a double digit decline in trade with the US, China's trade surplus grew in 2025 as it redirected trade to other allies across the globe, most notable the ASEAN alliance.
Wang Yi's quote brilliantly sums up the reality of the US China relationship: "Dialogue is better than confrontation, cooperation is better than conflict."
Take any hawkish view on China with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, the United States only has one option with China. Learn to compete and cooperate because China will have a massive impact on every important industry of the future
