What is the Balfour Declaration and why was it signed? Most people don’t realise that the Balfour Declaration is actually a letter sent by the former Prime Minister and then Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour to Lord Rothschild. Balfour was writing to Rothschild in order to pass on the promise that Britain would support the Zionist Federation. Britain wanted Jewish support at the time, particularly from US and Russian Jews, at a time where the war had become a stalemate. The British government hoped Jews in the US and Russia would convince their governments to stay in the war. Remarkable that Jews had this much power and influence over the affairs of the world’s superpowers. Who was behind the Balfour Declaration? Balfour, Lloyd George, Chaim Weizmann (later the President of Israel), Nahum Sokolow (Polish Jew), Herbert Samuel (first Jewish Cabinet Minister), Leo Amery (Jewish), Mark Sykes, and of course Rothschild himself. The negotiations were held orally and in private so few official records exist about exactly what was promised and in exchange for what. The British government sought the views of US President Woodrow Wilson before publishing the declaration. Wilson appointed the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice in the US, was close friends with several prominent Jewish financiers, and believed the Jews return to Israel was pre-ordained by God.
