The “Rules Based Order” is in roaring form. After six months of throwing international law on the bonfire, all to shield Israel from accountability, something has broken.
Western leaders and their sycophants in the media have finally - at the World Economic Forum in Davos - decided to change the script on their "rules-based international order," apparently over Trump's threats against Greenland. Threats that are plainly illegal, plainly monstrous. Another step into a yawning abyss, taking place as usual over the heads of people who live there and stand to pay the price. But these European and allied hypocrites are the last of all people who should be allowed to socially distance themselves from the smouldering ruin they have helped make of the world, nor should they be allowed to pretend now that this is all the work of Donald Trump.
These very leaders closed ranks with their American buddies in the Biden administration and set a torch to international law when they armed, backed and defended Israel's genocide in Gaza. It took months of popular pressure for a small handful of EU states - including Ireland - to venture even mild criticism of the apocalyptic slaughter Israel was carrying out. It took tens of thousands of innocent dead and the threat of complicity in crimes against humanity for them to even mention a ceasefire. The indelible stain will never wash off them. Even now - even now! - they will not break with Israel, conspiring with Netanyahu and Trump in various ways to bless the farcical and murderous "peace" imposed on Palestinians, hoping that the genocide - which has not stopped - will simply fall out the back of our heads so they can all just move on.
None of this is recent; none of this is new. As the rest of the world knows, the double standard from America's hangers-on has been the rule, not the exception. These same little leaders all lined up like clapping seals for a hideous war of aggression on Iran last year. Mere weeks ago they couldn't even bring themselves to describe what Trump did in Venezuela, let alone utter that it was illegal, because they had spent the last decade and more pretending that they too had the right to simply declare foreign elections illegitimate and to decide for the people of sovereign countries who their president was. This exact clique of flunkies and "yes men" have spent their careers helping to burn down every semblance of law, gloating at their victims, because they thought it could never happen to them, and now the most predictable thing in the world is happening.
Many of us were warning about this all along, but they didn't listen. They shot the messenger and carried on. The reality is that this is the world of their own making, and the tragedy is that ordinary people - who entrusted them with their destinies - now have to live in it and bear the consequences. None of these figures will ever feel the crunch, but - 11th hour rebrands and fawning press notwithstanding - they will be remembered by generations to come as the great fools of history, and they deserve it.
