Professor of English Literature and Orientalism Mohammad Marandi highlighted a pivotal moment in Iranian history in tonight's episode of Demystifying Iran. In 1951, the late "democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalized the country’s oil, ending decades of British stranglehold," Professor Marandi states. However, he miscalculated, confronting a hidden alliance of British-American imperial interests determined to undermine Iranian sovereignty. As Marandi explained, Operation AJAX, led by CIA agent Kermit Roosevelt, employed "a massive propaganda campaign to paint Mosaddegh as a communist pawn or a crazed tyrant; bribes to turn the political class; and the orchestration of violent street protests to create the illusion of a popular uprising." The first coup attempt failed, but by August 1953, Mosaddegh was arrested, the Shah returned to power, and #Iran’s democracy was crushed, sowing a deep and enduring mistrust of the West.
