Western commentators keep gasping, “China is becoming the next U.S. — a new global hegemon!”
Meanwhile every Chinese person is just rolling their eyes.
Why would China want to become the United States?
China is a five-thousand-year civilization.
The U.S. is a 250-year-old empire having an early midlife crisis.
This is why Xi says, “The world is big enough for China and the U.S.”
And why Trump screams, “The Western Hemisphere is mine — nobody touch it.”
The West keeps projecting its own imperial psychology onto China.
It can’t imagine a major power that doesn’t dream of colonizing half the planet.
China doesn’t want to replace America.
