OMG! Trump To Break Canada For Oil Reserves, Canada Confronts the Alberta Card
For years, Canada brushed aside India’s warnings about legitimising separatist movements under the banner of free speech. Today, that same approach is coming back to trouble Canada, this time from USA.
At the heart of the issue is Alberta, Canada’s oil powerhouse. Nearly 85% of Canada’s oil comes from this single province. Canada is the world’s fourth-largest oil producer, and Alberta alone pumps around 3.7 million barrels per day, roughly equal to Iran’s output. Whoever influences Alberta holds enormous leverage over Canada’s economy.
Recent reports reveal that officials linked to the Trump camp have held multiple meetings with groups advocating Alberta’s independence. These groups have even floated a demand of $500 billion in U.S. financial backing if separation takes place—support that would inevitably come with major strategic conditions.
The U.S. interest is hardly subtle. U.S. has openly described Alberta as a “natural partner,” pointing to its vast resources and criticising Canada for restricting pipeline expansion. Most of Alberta’s oil already flows to American refineries, and the U.S. clearly wants to keep Canada dependent.
Canada’s leadership has pushed back strongly, insisting Alberta will remain within a united country. However, Alberta’s laws allow a referendum if just 10% of voters demand it, enough to keep the pressure alive and uncertainty simmering.
As U.S.–Canada relations deteriorate over tariffs, defence deals, and economic coercion, the irony is hard to miss. The same logic Canada once defended, separatism as free expression, is now being used as a geopolitical weapon against it.
What goes around, indeed, comes around.https://x.com/Notjustheadline/status/2016928930150961431
