Simply astonishing how little media coverage the UK government's plan to have us all under 24-hour surveillance is getting – especially in the context of scrapping jury trials and labelling political dissidents, like opponents of genocide, as "terrorists". Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud says: "When I was in justice, my ultimate vision for that part of the criminal justice system was to achieve, by means of AI and technology, what Jeremy Bentham tried to do with his Panopticon. That is that the eyes of the state can be on you at all times." In Bentham's scheme, prison inmates would live in a circle of cells, always visible to unseen guards in a watchtower at the centre.
