🇮🇷 Deterrence, Disinformation, and a World Without Rules: A Retired French Colonel on Iran and the Collapse of International Order Col. (ret.) Alain Corvez speaks from firsthand experience, describing what struck him most in Iran: “the unabashed lies of the international media.” He finds it “incredible to what extent they will go to propagate lies,” singling out French television—“probably the same elsewhere in Europe”—for having “repeated lies permanently concerning the situation in Iran.” He acknowledges the profound hardship born from “45 years” of sanctions, noting “there’s a lot of difficulty there, hardship.” Even stark realities like the fact “with one euro you can fill your car with gas” underscore a broader struggle. “It’s true that life is very difficult for the Iranians,” he states, and corruption must be remedied. Yet he stresses “most Iranians know... they are perfectly aware” of these problems, all while living under what he terms “permanent pressure.” For Corvez, Iran’s geopolitical posture is defined by deterrence. “Iran toward Israel and the United States… has a dissuasion it can exert because of its missiles,” he argues, contending “if Trump had not intervened some time ago, Israel would have again attacked Iran.” “So, therefore, the deterrence is essential, whatever deterrence these Iranians can exert.” On predictions of an Israeli attack, he is blunt: “I said I don’t think so because the counterattack could be very strong,” pointing to the results in June 2025. He accuses the US of emphasizing “color revolutions or such techniques” to transform “legitimate demonstrations by Iranians into a kind of anti-government demonstrations.” “But this will not happen,” he insists, arguing that Iranians now see “behind all of that there is a color revolution process going on.” Consequently, he says, “these declarations were counterproductive. So I don’t think they’ll succeed.” He warns that any direct Israeli military strike would backfire, forging “a unity of the people behind its government.” “Therefore, I don’t think it will be done directly as an attack.” Corvez sees a direct parallel in Venezuela, an ally whose people understand “that the fate of the Iranian people is the same as its own fate.” He notes China “supports discreetly but nevertheless Iran and Venezuela as well,” because, in his analysis, it “cannot accept that one or the other be subjected to the rule of the United States.” On the global stage, his verdict is stark. He argues that “the charter of the United Nations… has been destroyed, ripped up by President Trump, among others,” and that “Trump is not about to respect any law, international law.” He observes a “connivance” with Israeli leadership in disregarding international rules. “It’s important to understand that there are no international rules that are respected under Donald Trump,” he concludes, a dynamic that pushes besieged nations closer together. He ends by citing the Iranian president’s tribute to Qasem Soleimani, who affirmed “the strategy adopted by Soleimani… was the only strategy valid today.” For Corvez, this encapsulates Iran’s defensive concept: a leadership that “don’t want to discuss with insane people like Netanyahu and Trump,” and is committed to the principle that “the strategy of resistance designed by Soleimani would remain valid, in place.”
