As an Iranian, I felt vicarious shame. As a lawyer, I was shocked.
In war, killing is not legally defined as murder; it may be justified within a narrowly defined legal framework. But war is not a metaphor. It is a legally defined situation.
What is happening in Iran is not a war. It is unarmed citizens exercising their right to protest. Human rights law applies, and the killing of protesters is absolutely unlawful.
