72 years ago, the CIA orchestrated a coup d'état in Latin America… not for oil… but for BANANAS. This was in Guatemala in 1954 to protect the profits of United Fruit Company (now Chiquita). Jacobo Arbenz was a democratically elected popular leader who distributed unused lands to farmers, raised minimum wage, legalized labor unions, and provided free and compulsory education. Of course, all these reforms were bad news for US agricultural firms, who depended for slave labor. And guess who was the law firm that represented United Fruit Company in Central America? The law firm of John Foster Dulles - the Sec. of State and brother of Allen Dulles, the CIA Director. The brothers also recruited Edward Bernays, the propaganda guru, to demonize Arbenz as a communist, to drum up support for regime change in Guatemala. Thus, the CIA operation to overthrow Jacobo Árbenz, code-named Operation PBSuccess, was authorized by President Eisenhower in August 1953. In 1954, banana company Chiquita once again became the ruler of Guatemala.
