The New South Wales Premier has argued that Australians cannot have American-style free speech because we are a multicultural society.
The implication is that free speech is incompatible with multiculturalism and must therefore be curtailed to preserve social cohesion. But this is a false remedy.
Restricting speech, especially on multicultural issues, does NOT resolve social disunity; it risks intensifying it.
Suppressing expression always drives grievances underground, where they harden into resentment or worse rather than being challenged and resolved through open debate.
In doing so, the state also undermines counter-speech. The only meaningful way bad ideas are defeated are by better ones.
So, if our politicians truly believe multiculturalism is a social good, let it be tested by free and open debate, without fear of punishment or reprisal.
