The Israeli recognition of Somaliland aligns closely with the UAE’s deepening strategy in the Horn of Africa, which has been developing since the mid-2010s. In August 2017, the Somaliland government signed an agreement with the UAE-based company DP World to manage and develop the Port of Berbera, with an investment of approximately $442 million and operating concessions extending for decades. This granted the UAE significant economic influence over one of the most strategically important points on maritime trade routes connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe, linking Dubai’s ports to strategic ports in the Horn of Africa, and positioning Berbera as a direct competitor to ports such as Djibouti, which also attracts attention from regional and global powers.
The agreement also allowed the Port of Berbera to serve as a logistical and strategic facility, including runways and support infrastructure, enhancing the UAE’s ability to control the region and monitor Houthi activity in Yemen, as well as providing military and logistical support to the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. In addition, the UAE maintains strategic positions in Yemen, notably the city of Aden and Socotra Island, which serve as key footholds to control the maritime routes of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, extending to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Through this network, the UAE can establish an integrated maritime corridor stretching from Dubai, through the Yemeni coast, to the Port of Berbera in Somaliland, reinforcing its maritime and economic influence and granting it the capacity for strategic and military intervention when necessary.
Somaliland, with its prime location on the Gulf of Aden near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, represents a strategic opportunity for Israel to expand its surveillance capabilities and secure vital shipping lanes considered crucial to its economic and defense security, especially given the escalating threats from the Houthis. The UAE supports this Israeli expansion through its control of the Port of Berbera in Somaliland and ports in Aden and Socotra, allowing Israel to leverage a strategic maritime network without the need to establish direct bases.
Today, confronting the political and military expansion of Israel and the UAE across the African continent has become imperative, as a response to foreign domination and as a necessary measure to challenge the mechanisms of neocolonialism that aim to fragment African states, undermine their sovereignty, and seize control of their vital resources.
