Michael Parenti: “[Poor] countries are not underdeveloped, they are overexploited” Africa is not poor. It has never been poor. As American political scientist Michael Parenti aptly states in this 1986 lecture at the University of Colorado, USA, you don’t go to poor countries to make money, you go to rich ones. What Africa is… is overexploitated. For centuries, the continent's mineral and human wealth was extracted by predatory societies to build their own wealth. Europe and the United States did not rise by their merit, but by robbing other civilizations of the chance to rise too. The robbery continues to this day.
