A new round of tyrannical EU "disinfo sanctions" this week, imposing "civil death" (travel bans and asset freezes) on European citizens for speech EU governments disagree with.
No charges, no right to be heard, no judge, no jury, no trial, no oversight, no transparency, no accountability. 27 ministers casting votes in a locked room in Brussels to irreparably wreck the lives of people who have said things they don't like.
It doesn't matter what the victims said or wrote or how bad you think it is. How is this justice? In civilized societies people get a trial before they are punished by the state. How is it consistent with the right to the freedom of expression enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights? It is irreconcilable with that right.
This is not a power any government should have. If you agree with the governments of today, think of how it will be used by the governments of tomorrow. If you sit by and accept this happening to people you disagree with, you are making a rod for your own back.
The so-called "fight against disinformation" has always been a blatantly unlawful and authoritarian onslaught on freedom of expression and basic principles of political liberty. The very meaning of democracy, built up over centuries, is being battered and broken by "liberal" EU governments and there is silence pretty much across the board, from civil society and the press.
Don't be silent. The European Parliament can move to have this sanctions regime annulled. Contact your MEP NOW and insist that they take action.
