Several pro-Israel US lawmakers are reportedly preparing to introduce a congressional resolution seeking to alter the long-standing status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied Jerusalem. The effort, led by Congresswoman Claudia Tenney and Congressman Clay Higgins, is backed by the Zionist Organization of America and the Middle East Truth Foundation, both of whom are groups closely aligned with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The draft resolution urges the US House to affirm Israeli sovereignty over the site, which is referred to by Israel as the Temple Mount, and to recognize “the inalienable right of the Jewish people to full access and prayer” there, reaffirming US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital. While framed as promoting religious freedom, the measure effectively challenges the 1994 Wadi Araba Agreement, which established Jordan’s custodianship over Al-Aqsa.
Analysts warn the initiative could spark regional unrest, describing it as part of a broader effort by Israel’s right wing to assert full control over occupied Jerusalem and divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex both temporally and spatially.
