“Troops for what — to fulfill the agenda of the occupied or to fulfill the agenda of the occupier? That’s the question.”
Colombia’s Presidential Advisor for the Middle East Victor de Currea-Lugo told Drop Site News this is the concern his government has with the Trump-backed U.S. proposal at the UN for post-war Gaza, which envisions a foreign governing board and multinational troops charged with disarming Palestinians.
He says Colombia does not oppose an international presence in itself, but warns that if the plan “will maintain the occupation,” extend Israel’s “impunity” and “military control… of the Palestinian community,” or limit Palestinians’ ability to build a real economy, “it doesn’t work.”
Instead, he says Colombia supports “salvation troops” — engineers, medical teams, and other personnel meant to help “the Palestinian people to realize their own self-determination right,” which “is not just a slogan; it should be a reality.”
“One big condition: self-determination. We cannot decide on behalf of the Palestinian people,” he reiterated. Any outside plan, including Trump’s, fails “if we impose our will.”
