Robert Malley on the myth of “Palestinians walked away” at Camp David (July 2000):
➤ Malley says the popular story pushed since 2000 – that Arafat rejected a “generous offer” – is contradicted by the actual record. Israeli PM Barak sidelined the Palestinians for a year, expanded settlements, pursued Syria first, then at the last-minute dragged Arafat to a “pressure cooker” summit entirely on U.S.–Israeli terms.
➤ There was no map, no detailed offer, and Palestinians were asked to surrender their final claims regarding Jerusalem, refugees, borders in exchange for vague promises from leaders who were weeks from leaving office.
➤ Malley warns the revival of this disingenuous narrative after Oct. 7 is being used to justify Israel’s genocide (including by figures like Hillary Clinton). And he emphasizes Camp David wasn’t the end: negotiations continued at Taba, until Israel’s Barak cut them off to face elections.
