Make no mistake. This is the same rhetoric that allowed for the post 9/11 ravaging of Arab and Muslim rights at home and abroad. It is the same rhetoric that enabled the war on Iraq, grounded in lies, and the moral and legal abomination that was Guantanamo Bay. Trust me. I worked in both places, trying to undo the damage this kind of dehumanising language wrought. My question is: have we learned nothing? Have we not learned that racism and dehumanization lead to the indiscriminate erosion of the rights and life of the dehumanized? Have we not learned to speak up when we see this kind of hate speech, that enables so much harm against an entire people? Who are we today if this kind of speech is enabled and shared and applauded and amplified? Who are we? I shudder to think of the answer. how’s that for an episode? Will you give airtime to those being discriminated against or just those doing the discrimination?
