"WE must give Hebrew names to these places - ancient names, if there are, and if not, [invent] new ones!" - David Ben-Gurion's diary, June 1949,* writing about parts of Israel Jews and Arabs still referred to by their Arabic names. Does this sound like an attempt to 'restore an indigenous culture'? Or an attempt to cover up the culture you are trying to destroy, through an "indigenization" process?
