Trump and his Defence Secretary speak in this way because they have utter contempt for international law and for the values that bind civilised nations. The Geneva Conventions were established after the horrors of the Second World War to protect civilians, prisoners of war, and even soldiers themselves from atrocities. To dismiss them as “stupid rules” is not only reckless but deeply sinister. It signals a willingness to legitimise war crimes, to strip away accountability, and to pursue military power without restraint. That is why such rhetoric is so dangerous, and why it must be challenged wherever it appears.
