It seems obvious that Israel is destroying the Gaza Strip in order to take the land and settle it. No doubt, the settler contingent in the current Israeli government is loud and proud of its intentions and actions. Still, I would suggest that the evil perpetrated by Israel is even greater.
The destruction in Gaza exceeds even the capabilities of Israeli settlers. They excel at stealing land and ethnically cleansing its inhabitants, but they have no access to the resources required in order to make the abomination Israel created livable again. I think the real desire being met here, the one shared by the great majority of Israelis, is to ensure that Palestinians could never live in this land so we can finally be alone. Only by ensuring a truly empty space around us could we finally find our holy grail and feel "secure". In other words, this destruction is not utilitarian in nature; it is one of Israel's defining principles, our bedrock.
There is a broader thought to be developed here (look for it on my upcoming substack 
), but reality is stark enough to invoke now. Israel has annihilated Gaza. Any attempts to suggest that there are comparisons to be made woth Dresden and Hiroshima are ridiculous, not just because of the scope but because ofnthe systematic, deliberate thoroughness. Israel demolishes structure after structure, on the ground, mobilizing countless soldiers and contractors (and paying them through the nose) to make sure nothing remains standing.
We have tied our survival not simply to the death of Palestinians but to the disappearance of everyone but us. We go through unprecedented lengths to ensure "their" perennial absence. People all over the world wonder if Israelis realize the extent of the animosity they generate. We do. Even our renewed efforts at "just being normal" (an incredible genre of writing that needs to be explored) are already configuring themselves towards finally achieving our true destiny - not Sparta, but the Fortress of Solitude.
