Israel secretly removes Marwan Barghouti from prisoner list, jeopardizing ceasefire deal: MEE —— Israel’s prime minister’s office unilaterally removed Marwan Barghouti’s name from the prisoner exchange list at the last minute, despite it having already been approved by mediators, including US envoy Steve Witkoff, sources told Middle East Eye (MEE). Barghouti, a senior Fatah leader, widely considered the most popular Palestinian political figure, was one of the most high-profile detainees expected to be traded for 48 Israeli captives under the first phase of the ceasefire deal. According to sources close to Barghouti and the negotiations, his removal, alongside other prominent prisoners such as Ahmad Saadat, Hassan Salameh, and Abdullah Barghouti, has thrown the deal into uncertainty. His name is considered a political red line for Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, whose opposition could threaten Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Meanwhile, Barghouti’s wife remains in Cairo lobbying mediators to ensure his inclusion, while Hamas and other Palestinian factions continue consultations to unify their stance on Israel’s response to the prisoner list. Egyptian and Qatari officials had previously pushed hard for his release, seeing him as central to any long-term political outcome.
