Imagine being so desperate to improve your reputation that the only people you can recruit are those who damage it beyond repair. Your main boosters are anonymous troll farms who dare not reveal themselves because they care more about their own reputation than yours, and for the most part are in it only for the money. You invite Tommy Robinson for a state visit because you think hosting a violent far-right thug is a brilliant idea, then expose him as the fraud he is by lecturing him in public about the perfidy of his own country, which he takes in like a submissive underling. You convince yourself that the likes of Brianna Wu, Steven Bonnell (excuse me, that's Steven Bonnell the Second), Dr Phil, and Azealia Banks, whose main qualities are staggering ignorance and spiteful malevolence, are the reincarnation of Saatchi & Saatchi. You promote shameless charlatans like Andrew Fox, whose "reports" don't withstand even elementary scrutiny, to set up fake clubs to enable rampages abroad by the worst your society has to offer. You think getting white supremacists like Douglas Murray, Geert Wilders, and similar clowns who can't stop blathering about the great replacement theory and Islam, Islam, Islam to do your bidding is going to win hearts and minds. You promote self-styled ex-Muslims like Ayaan Hirsi Ali Mosab Yousef, and others whose ideological fanaticism easily matches that of any Islamist and far exceeds that of most. And to top it all off you think the constant hysteria emanating from the likes of David Collier and Michael Rapaport is making you genuinely beloved. While it is true that only the very bottom of the barrel remains available, if you’ve convinced yourself this is a winning strategy you’re cooked beyond repair.
