Last week, China’s Ministry of Commerce dropped a quiet but *devastating* flex: for the first time ever, official policy documents were released **exclusively in WPS format**—Kingsoft’s homegrown alternative to Microsoft Word 
Translation? You can’t open them in Word without jumping through hoops. And yes, this is 100% intentional 
While Washington obsesses over rare earth export controls and dreams of decoupling, Beijing is busy *de-Microsoft-ing* its bureaucracy—part of a broader, methodical push for tech self-reliance amid America's containment push and TACO Trump's tantrums
The move helped China emerge almost unscathed from an outage of Microsoft’s Windows operating system in July 2024 caused by a faulty update provided by Texas-based cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, with a host of critical service providers – from airlines to banks – having already reduced their use of foreign systems
China’s State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission announced in 2022 that state-owned enterprises were required to achieve full adoption of domestic software across their operational systems and daily office functions by 2027.
And of course, if Trump hears about this, he’ll probably blame it on his teleprompter “crashing like Biden’s foreign policy” or claim WPS stands for “Wuhan Paper Sabotage.” 
But let’s be clear: this isn’t just about file formats. It’s about **digital sovereignty**. Every .wps file is a brick in China’s firewall against Western tech imperialism 
And to be honest: WPS isn’t just patriotic 
—it’s practical. Faster load times, lighter on system resources, fully compatible with legacy formats, and yes—a fraction of Microsoft’s bloated subscription cost. While Office 365 nags you about cloud logins and “AI-powered” paperclips that spy on your drafts, WPS just… works. No digital leash to MS.
