🚨BREAKING: UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) will formally declare famine in Gaza City on Friday, the Telegraph reports. The IPC applies famine classification when three criteria are met: ▪️20% of households facing extreme food shortages ▪️30% of children acutely malnourished ▪️and at least 2 deaths per 10,000 people each day from starvation The IPC will state that a famine is taking place in the “Gaza Governorate,” according to a briefing shared with partner organizations and seen by The Telegraph. It will be the first such declaration in Gaza, covering the city and surrounding areas—home to over 500,000 people. “After 22 months of relentless conflict, over half a million people in the Gaza Strip are facing catastrophic conditions, characterised by starvation, destitution and death,” the IPC briefing reportedly says. The briefing also reportedly warns that famine is projected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September, with another 1.07 million people already at “emergency” levels of hunger. Only four famines have been declared worldwide since 2004, when the IPC was established. Israel has denied famine in Gaza, and officials have repeatedly rejected claims of any hunger crisis at all. Netanyahu on Thursday approved the military takeover of Gaza City while insisting Israel has let “hundreds of trucks” in. But Israel blocked all aid convoys on March 2, only allowing a trickle in late May along with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation — a lethal distribution scheme that has since killed more than 2,000 Palestinians and wounded tens of thousands more — before slightly loosening restrictions on July 27. For the past 25 days, according to the Gaza Government Media Office, just 15% of the minimum daily required aid has been permitted to enter. UN data and reports from humanitarians and journalists on the ground show most trucks are intercepted by starving civilians or armed gangs before reaching central kitchens or warehouses — the result of Israel systematically targeting police and volunteers tasked with securing convoys — a strategy that the Media Office describes as Israel’s “deliberately engineered chaos and starvation.” (Source: Telegraph)
