Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor Emeritus of Modern Arab Studies, has announced he will no longer teach his 📍signature fall course at Columbia, citing the university’s “capitulation” to the Trump administration. ➤ In an open letter published by The Guardian, Khalidi says the deal with Trump officials effectively criminalizes criticism of Israel and makes it impossible to teach honestly about the Middle East. “The IHRA definition deliberately, mendaciously and disingenuously conflates Jewishness with Israel, so that any criticism of Israel, or indeed description of Israeli policies, becomes a criticism of Jews.” ➤ Columbia has agreed to let an outside “compliance monitor” access faculty, classrooms, and disciplinary proceedings—measures Khalidi says transform the university into an “anti-university.” ➤ “The teaching, syllabi and scholarship of some of the most prominent academics… will be vetted by political appointees and outside firms,” he writes, calling it a “shameful capitulation.” Khalidi will instead launch a public lecture series on modern Middle East history, with proceeds going to Gaza’s destroyed universities.
